Karve Energy Inc. is a private oil and natural gas exploration and production company focused on the Viking light oil play in east central Alberta. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Calgary, Karve operates across a growing portfolio of wellsites in the Greater Provost area, with an active capital program and a dedicated focus on responsible operations, environmental stewardship, and meeting its asset retirement obligations on schedule.

With a decommissioning and reclamation liability of approximately $27.3 million CAD as of late 2025, Karve's sustainability function carries significant responsibility for managing remediation spend, coordinating field consultants, and keeping projects on track against mandatory regulatory timelines.

The Challenge

Before Matidor, Karve's sustainability team was using SiteView alongside spreadsheets to manage field projects and site data. The problem was that the data was rarely consistent or up to date. Spreadsheets required constant manual updates from the field, and the team could not trust what they were looking at.

The operational impact was real: the team was spending significant time chasing information rather than acting on it. With a growing portfolio of sites at various stages of remediation and reclamation, and with mandatory spend obligations that require budgets to be neither too high nor too low, the cost of unreliable data was not just operational — it was financial.

Day-to-day coordination with consultants is now visible and manageable through Matidor's project management tools, and the team can see activity as it happens rather than waiting for updates to be compiled and sent.

I pull the costs daily to see how close we are to budgets. Our consultants are expected to add costs in daily. We use this for accruals and can see how close we are to spend, which is very important with mandatory spend. We cannot be too much under budget but also cannot be below. So this allows us to pivot as we watch costs.

Budget and Cost Control

Budget tracking is now a live, daily process. Consultants are expected to enter costs into Matidor each day. The sustainability team pulls costs daily to monitor how close each project is to its budget — which is critical given the mandatory spend obligations Karve operates under.

Before Matidor, this level of oversight required spreadsheets and constant manual updates from the field. The process was reactive. Now it is proactive.

A Real Decision That Saved the Program

The clearest example of Matidor's budget visibility paying off came during a remediation season when Karve had planned to complete eight remediations. As costs on one of those remediations climbed higher than expected, the team was able to see the trend in real time through Matidor and made the decision to cancel almost all remaining rems for the year, reallocating spend before the situation became unmanageable.

This kind of decision requires data that is current, visible, and trustworthy. Spreadsheets and after-the-fact field updates cannot support that level of real-time response. Matidor could.
